This week on the podcast, our favorite guest (actually, our most popular guest of all time), Jamie Winship is back to talk about how to live fearlessly in your true identity. Of all the conversations we've had with Jamie, this one is the cornerstone. One of the main messages I want you to extrapolate from the conversation is understanding why we so easily lean toward behavior modification instead of heart transformation.

If you enjoy this episode with Jamie, I'm sure you'll also enjoy:

Marilyn Vancil, a 30-year Enneagram veteran, joins us today to talk about growing beyond the Enneagram, understanding your inner story, how to navigate the middle passage of life, and why you can't change yourself by yourself. To that, Marilyn said, “True transformation happens not on the outside but in our inner being where the Spirit of Christ dwells, guides, and restores us.” Marilyn is a good friend of Jamie Winship, whom you all love and value, so I was eager to have this conversation with her.

A few months ago, I found the research and work of Dr. Casey Halpern, who is the Professor of Neurosurgery at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Halpern’s research and clinical practice focus on using deep brain stimulation to treat compulsive and movement disorders such as obsessive-compulsive disorder, eating disorders, as well as other neurologic conditions. My goal in speaking with Dr. Halpern was to understand the roots of compulsive behaviors and how they are related to anxiety and trauma, and my hope is that after listening, you'll receive greater education about this very relevant subject.

Partner Spotlight:

But first, if 2023 is the year you're going to launch a podcast, write a book, create a website, or start building any type of online presence, The Art of Leadership Academy has a free Mastermind to help you with exactly that. This week, Tyler Staton joins us to talk about reviving a culture of prayer in a post-Christian world. Prayer is the source of Jesus's most astonishing miracles and the subject of Jesus's most audacious promises, and yet, most people--even most Bible-believing Christians--find prayer to be boring, obligatory, disappointing, confusing, or, most often, all of the above. If you've ever felt this way, today's conversation is hopefully going to turn your conceptions around.

This week on the podcast, author and popular speaker, Toni Collier joins us to talk about healing from trauma, EMDR, dumping spirituality and "Christian Buddhism," and why you can't heal yourself by yourself. After a lifetime of childhood trauma, navigating a toxic marriage and divorce, an unhealthy church, becoming a single parent and feeling betrayed, Toni felt shame-filled and used. Because of her brokenness, she believed she was unworthy and unqualified to have a life of meaning and purpose. Many of us have felt the same thing if we're honest. So, in today's conversation, we'll unpack the truth that leads to freedom.

About a year ago, I watched a documentary on Netflix called Seven Days Out, and was captivated by one of the episodes featuring a restaurateur named Will Guidara. Well, this week, Will is here, and he joins me to talk about trust, loyalty, hard conversations, and why adversity is a terrible thing to waste. Will is the former co-owner of Eleven Madison Park in New York City, which received four stars from the New York Times, earned three Michelin stars, and was named the number-one restaurant in the world. Add to that Will is married to renowned pastry chef, Christina Tosi, also seen on Netflix's Chef's Table. This conversation was one of my favorites this year, so I'm excited to share it with you in just a moment.

Joining me this week is Diego Perez, otherwise known by his pen name, yung pueblo. Diego says, "Healing does not erase the past, and the point of healing is not to forget what has happened." As you probably know, I totally agree. You guys, scars tell a story, and scars form after healing happens. But too many of us unknowingly live life through emblematic "open wounds" of the soul. We've done so for so long that we don't recognize the dysfunction and pain for what it really is. What's the path out? And how do we begin the process of transformation? That's where we're headed in today's featured conversation.

This week, author and pastor Dharius Daniels is here to talk about emotional intelligence and the misguided pursuit of "your best self." Dharius has been poking a box called “You do you. Be true to yourself. Speak your truth. Become your best self.” But as we look at culture that is embracing that message, despair, anxiety, depression, and suicidal ideation is rampant. We'll unpack the disconnect with Dharius today, along with a discussion about identity and significance. Dharius says, “God will not honor the direction of our lives when we are living outside of our unique identity.” In other words, God will not bless who we pretend to be. That's coming up in today's featured conversation.

Most, if not all, self-help tools lead us back to ourselves. But as believers, we’re not to live limited by the human condition. We’re on a spiritual journey of transformation from the inside out. And one of the tools we can use to understand our motivations in life is the Enneagram. This week, Beth and Jeff McCord, from Your Enneagram Coach, join me for a deeper dive into the world of the Enneagram by moving past the quickly assigned and sometimes stereotypical Enneagram Types to consider and engage your unique, multidimensional personality that makes you so much more complex than just a number.

If 90% of the population struggles with anxiety, what are we missing in our approach to understanding and treating it?

This week, Dr. Wendy Suzuki joins us to talk about why anxiety just might be helpful in our growth. She said, “When you adopt strategies that harness the neural networks of anxiety, you open the door to activating your brain-body at an even deeper, more meaningful level. Instead of feeling at the mercy of anxiety, we can take charge of it in concrete ways. Anxiety becomes a tool to supercharge our brains and bodies in ways that will resound in every dimension of our lives.”

Dr. Wendy Suzuki is a Professor of Neural Science and Psychology in the Center for Neural Science at New York University. She received her undergraduate degree in physiology and human anatomy at the University of California, Berkeley in 1987 studying with Prof. Marion C. Diamond, a leader in the field of brain plasticity. She went on to earn her Ph.D. in Neuroscience from U.C. San Diego in 1993 and completed her doctoral fellowship at the National Institutes of Health before accepting her faculty position at New York University in 1998. In addition, she is a bestselling author and has graced TED stages across the globe.

Change is inevitable in life. But how do you know when it's time to make a change?

This week, leadership consultant and author, Jeff Henderson, joins us to provide a masterclass on change and dealing with uncertainty. He says, "What's behind you has shaped you, good and bad. What's behind you becomes dangerous when it shackles you. What's behind you becomes helpful when you embrace where you are as a starting point, not a conclusion." Jeff Henderson has spent decades in executive leadership and is here today to help prepare you for your next inevitable change in life. And here's how I want to set up the conversation, with more wisdom from Jeff. He says, "We didn't sign up for easy. We signed up for worthwhile." Our guest today, Jason Wilson, is a prolific coach to many men, young and old, across the nation. He says, "Strength depends on the physical ability of the body, but power is based on the spiritual rule over the body." For decades, Jason Wilson was losing the war within—the internal battle that many men wage daily but were never taught how to win. As a result, he could not combat his toxic thoughts and emotions. Instead, he was conquered by them and communicated without composure—hurting those he loved and himself. This went on until he renewed his mind by releasing years of past trauma. His life and relationships were transformed when he learned how to master his emotions and express them with self-control. In the process, Jason became a better husband, father, and leader. And today, you'll hear from Jason and learn how to do the same.

This week, we're revisiting a riveting conversation I had with Dr. Anna Lembke, Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University. We’re living in a time of unprecedented access to high-reward, high-dopamine stimuli: drugs, food, news, gambling, shopping, gaming, texting, and social media. Dr. Lembke says that "the increased numbers, variety, and potency is staggering. The smartphone is the modern-day hypodermic needle, delivering digital dopamine 24/7 for a wired generation. As such we’ve all become vulnerable to compulsive overconsumption." So today, Dr. Lembke is going to explain why the relentless pursuit of pleasure leads to pain…and what to do about it.
