Today, we’re talking all about developing the grit, tenacity, and perseverance to endure trials in life when they show-up at our doorstep. And our guest today is no stranger to any of that. Devon Still is a former defensive tackle who played for the Cincinnati Bengals, Houston Texans, and New York Jets. As a young professional athlete, he was offered a multimillion-dollar contract to play football, what many would consider a dream. For Devon Still, life has been a journey from one scar to the next and literally from one challenge to the next. Injury after injury started in high school and continued into his illustrious college football career as captain at Penn State, and even into his career in the NFL. But the biggest challenge of his life came when his young daughter, Leah, was diagnosed with stage four neuroblastoma, a deadly brain cancer. Everything Devon knew about winning was about to be challenged. Everything he knew about life was about to be challenged. And everything he truly valued in life was about to be put on the line. But pumping through Devon’s soul, behind the brokenness and fear, was a determination to use the tactics he learned on the field to fight for his daughter’s life until death. Literally. In today’s conversation, you’re going to be challenged to ask yourself, in your own pain, whether or not you’re going to quit before time is up. It’s a question we all have to face in trials. Every storm you face will either break you or make you stronger. Buy Devon's Book Be proud of your scars. They’re signs that you survived whatever tried to break you. For Devon Still, life has been a journey from one scar to the next. From one challenge to the next. His is a story of pushing through pain and overcoming obstacles of all shapes and sizes—of choosing to fight for the sake of his family, his community, and his faith. Millions of people around the world have been inspired by Devon’s tireless devotion in helping his daughter, Leah, learn how to “beat up cancer.” But in these pages, Devon takes readers behind the headlines to reveal the deeper story of what prepared him for that fight. Still in the Game: Finding the Faith to Tackle Life’s Biggest Challenges is Devon’s declaration that our challenges reveal our purpose, that our scars make us stronger, and that no loss is too great to stop our comeback! A decorated, retired police officer in the Metro Washington DC Area, Jamie Winship has spent over 25 years, living in the Middle East, deep in the Muslim world, where he was called upon by the U.S. State Department to subdue and pacify hostile situations and people groups—without force. In a truly covert way, Jamie and his wife Donna found themselves teaching people how to hear from God and live in his Kingdom. Today, Jamie and Donna speak around the U.S. and across the globe. Together, they serve as catalysts to help people find their God-given identity and experience a life of freedom. Through dynamic storytelling and real-life application, as you’ll hear today, Jamie teaches in ways that allow people just like you to experience the reality of hearing God's voice in their daily lives. In today’s conversation, you’re going to learn how to elevate your thinking, renew your mind, and live in your true identity in such a way that the very same situations you face, people you work with, and experiences you have each and every day will now have solutions you didn’t previously know could ever exist. This conversation could very well change your life without any of the circumstances in your life directly changing. As you think, in your heart so are you. Andi was born and raised in Spokane, Washington, and in 2002, married her husband Paul in Sydney, Australia. In 2010, her family packed up their lives and moved to NYC to establish Liberty Church, which is now a growing church with multiple communities in the city. But it was in the last couple years, though, that challenges in her own life forced her to answer the question of whether or not she was living as a fake. The death of her mother-in-law and other hardships made her come to terms with what she really believed…and lived. You see, we live in a culture where many identify as "Christian" without fully embracing what it looks like to follow Jesus day-in and day-out. And in our conversation today, Andi doesn’t pull any punches in helping us determine our lives are void of true transformation. Is the gospel, the message of Jesus, simply a self-help tool? And how do live the life in 2019? It's time to ask ourselves, "Am I really following Jesus? Or am I just faking it? Buy the Book We live in a culture where many identify as "Christian" without fully embracing what it looks like to follow Jesus day-in and day-out. After gathering on a Sunday, do we simply go about our business, void of true transformation? Is the gospel simply a self-help tool, the church just a place where our needs can be met? It's time to ask ourselves, "Am I really following Jesus? Or am I just faking it?" With eye-opening personal stories, Scripture, and thought-provoking questions, Andi Andrew lovingly invites readers to examine their hearts to discover whether their faith is a genuine, life-giving marriage of belief and practice in response to Christ's life and sacrifice, or if it is just a lifestyle choice on par with any other. She encourages readers to surrender their whole lives to Jesus daily, grapple with hard questions they may have been avoiding, and discover a life fully alive, following in the way, the truth, and the life of Jesus Christ. As a leader, your decisions are critical. They have a significant effect on you and everyone around you. But the effective leader needs to have more than just logic, facts, and financials to help make the best choices. Leaders also must access their own intuition, that gut feeling inside. Dr. John Townsend knows that a leader’s internal world—the world of intuition, creativity, emotion, and spirituality—is just as important as the external world of data and best practices. Who you are on the inside determines your success as a leader even more than the things you do or the things you know. “You were designed with both an external world and an inner world,” Townsend says, “and they work well together. Accessing both of these areas will take a little knowledge and a little work, but it will help you be the leader you want to be.” This week, you’ll learn how leaders excel not just through external competencies and skills but by drawing on their internal world and personal experience.  You’ll explore how to harness the power of your values, thoughts, emotions, and relationships to better meet the complex demands of leadership. And before you begin, buy Leading from Your Gut: How You Can Succeed by Harnessing the Power of Your Values, Feelings, and Intuition right here! John Eldredge said, “I’ll guarantee you something. When you are in the midst of serious heartache, trauma, and disappointment, you can have God or you can have understanding.” Today, we’re talking all about the root causes of regret, cynicism, and defeat through the lens of unresolved disappointment, with John. But we’re not stopping there. We’re diving in to the antidote, real hope. We’ll also explore how men and women process these situations differently and why putting on the “Christianese” packaging does nothing but insulate our hearts from the Healer Himself. Buy the Book This revolutionary book about our future is based on the simple idea that, according to the Bible, heaven is not our eternal home--the New Earth is. As Jesus says in the gospel of Matthew, the next chapter of our story begins with "the renewal of all things," by which he means the earth we love in all its beauty, our own selves, and the things that make for a rich life: music, art, food, laughter and all that we hold dear. Everything shall be renewed "when the world is made new." More than anything else, how you envision your future shapes your current experience. If you knew that God was going to restore your life and everything you love any day; if you believed a great and glorious goodness was coming to you--not in a vague heaven but right here on this earth--you would have a hope to see you through anything, an anchor for your soul, "an unbreakable spiritual lifeline, reaching past all appearances right to the very presence of God" (Hebrews 6:19). Most Christians (most people for that matter) fail to look forward to their future because their view of heaven is vague, religious, and frankly boring. Hope begins when we understand that for the believer nothing is lost. Heaven is not a life in the clouds; it is not endless harp-strumming or worship-singing. Rather, the life we long for, the paradise Adam and Eve knew, is precisely the life that is coming to us. And that life is coming soon. Buy All Things New: Heaven, Earth, and the Restoration of Everything You Love now. There is a path leading to authentic manhood, cut by men who have gone before us, sons following in the footsteps of their fathers, generation after generation. There are perils along the trail, even disasters? All the more reason to rely on the guidance of a Father who has gone before. But in an age when true fathers are in short supply, how do you find the path to manhood? How do you steer clear of the dangers? In Fathered by God: Learning What Your Dad Could Never Teach You, John Eldredge calls men back to a simple and reassuring truth: God is our Father. In life's trials and triumphs, God is initiating boys and men through the stages of manhood from Beloved Son to Cowboy to Warrior to Lover to King to Sage. Fathered by God maps out the path of manhood? Not more rules, not another list of principles, not formulas, but a sure path men have followed for centuries before us. Find that path and become the man God sees in you. Every man was once a boy.  And every little has dreams, big dreams, dreams of being the hero, of beating the bad guys, of doing daring feats and rescuing the damsel in distress. Every little girl has dreams, too: of being rescued by her prince and swept up into a great adventure, knowing that she is the beauty. But what happens to those dreams when we grow up? Walk into most churches, have a look around, and ask yourself: What is a Christian man?  Without listening to what is said, look at what you find there. Most Christian men are bored. John Eldredge revises and updates his best-selling, renowned Christian classic, Wild at Heart, and in it invites men to recover their masculine heart, defined in the image of a passionate God. And he invites women to discover the secret of a man’s soul and to delight in the strength and wildness men were created to offer. About John Eldredge John Eldredge is an author (you probably figured that out),

Here’s a fact: recent statistics indicate that more than 65% of working adults would choose a new boss over a pay increase. And that’s not totally surprising. In my estimation, what’s behind that statistic is a societal cry for better leadership—true leaders—to rise-up in society. But what we need is for leaders today to stop making the mistake of trying to be someone else and instead, step into the uniqueness of their identity. Here’s the point: all too often, leaders—maybe even you—set out to emulate their heroes but end up eclipsing their own unique, God-given identities in the process. Joining us today to discuss this very issue is president of Catalyst Leadership and certified leadership coach, Tyler Reagin. Buy the Book The president of Catalyst Leader believes that the most impactful and most influential leaders are the ones who lead from who they truly are, not who they pretend or wish to be. With clear biblical teaching and personal accounts, Tyler Reagin not only demonstrates the necessity of life-giving leadership, but also provides the steps you'll need to begin knowing and leading from your truest self. From his experiences in high-impact leadership roles at some of our nation's largest churches and ministries, Reagin has learned firsthand the importance of identity-based leadership. His desire is to help each reader become an empowered, confident leader that brings life and vibrancy to every room they enter. But it happens to the best of us, doesn’t it? It’s rarely issues of talent or ability that take down people like you and me. Often, it's the issues far beneath the surface. Just look at the news. Abandoned by his father at age two, Rick Sylvester lived with an abusive mother whose struggles as a member of the working poor led her to drugs, alcohol, theft, and prostitution - and eventually attempted suicide. Rick battled depression, anxiety, and PTSD as the chaos, neglect, and unpredictability of his childhood seemed to doom him to follow in his mother's footsteps. Well into adulthood, Rick stumbled through unemployment and divorce, using drugs and alcohol to numb the pain until he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Miraculously, though, he overcame the odds and today is a happy husband and father. How did this happen? Rick's answer is this: "It was the Lord.” A message of hope to those who are drowning from an undeserved childhood, Leaving Cloud 9: The True Story of a Life Resurrected from the Ashes of Poverty, Trauma, and Mental Illness speaks to millions who grew up poor, feeling ignored and hopeless, and who need the healing power of God. This indelibly American story conveys the steadfast love of Jesus and his power to deliver us from the most devastating of pasts. Crisis, loss, and disappointment are all things most of us will experience in life. And in the midst of personal hell, I know it’s true—because I’ve lived it—that we can barely take the next step in front of us—like paying bills on time, having normal conversations, or even remembering to eat regular meals. Beyond hopelessness is despair, and that’s an even scarier place to live. I’ve been there too. So how in the world are we even supposed to say the word “hope,” let alone cultivate it in the midst of crisis. For some of us, life has taught us that there’s no point in getting our hopes up, because the disappointment that follows hurts even worse. And that’s valid. But that’s also not real hope. The question is, then, what is real hope in the midst of chaos? Joining us today to answer that question is New York Times bestselling author, and leader of leaders, pastor of the largest church in America, Craig Groeschel. And today, he’s going to teach us precisely how to hope in the dark. Buy the Book “I want to believe, I want to have hope, but…” Pastor and bestselling author Craig Groeschel hears these words often and has asked them himself. We want to know God, feel his presence, and trust that he hears our prayers, but in the midst of great pain, we may wonder if he really cares about us. Even when we have both hope and hurt, sometimes it’s the hurt that shouts the loudest. Can God be good when life is not In Hope in the Dark: Believing God Is Good When Life Is Not, Groeschel explores the story of the father who brought his demon-possessed son to Jesus, saying, “I believe! Help my unbelief!” In the man’s sincere plea, Jesus heard the tension in the man’s battle-scarred heart. He healed not only the boy but the father too, driving out the hopelessness that had overtaken him. He can do the same for us today. As Groeschel shares his pain surrounding the current health challenges of his daughter, he acknowledges the questions we may ask in our own deepest pain: “Where was God when I was being abused?” “Why was my child born with a disability?” “Why did the cancer come back?” “Why are all my friends married and I’m alone?” He invites us to wrestle with such questions as we ask God to honor our faith and heal our unbelief. In the middle of your profound pain, you long for authentic words of understanding and hope. You long to know that even in overwhelming reality, you can still believe that God is good. Rediscover a faith in the character, power, and presence of God. Even in the questions. Even now. Buy Hope in the Dark: Believing God Is Good When Life Is Not now. Fear, guilt, shame, bitterness, and regret. Five deadly emotions that will lie to you about your identity, sink daggers of despair into your heart, and sabotage your relationships and your potential in life. What do most people do about the lingering effects of those five emotions in their lives? At least on my end, I surpassed them until it was too painful to do so any longer. And that wasn’t a good choice. Men and women all over the country unknowingly make decisions from a false identity created by fear, guilt, or shame. But they don’t know they’re doing it. So life sort of flat-lines and they think it’s just the way things are supposed to end-up. What if there was a way to reach way down to the root of those emotions, set healthy boundaries for our soul, and instead, change the trajectory of our lives simply by a change of heart? I believe it’s possible. Joining us today is Kimberly Miller. She’s the co-author of the brand-new book, Boundaries for Your Soul: How to Turn Your Overwhelming Thoughts and Feelings into Your Greatest Allies, and she’s going to guide you through a five-step process to transform these liabilities into powerful strengths. Buy the Book What if feelings like anger, sadness, and fear could improve your life for the better? In this practical, life-changing book, Christian counselors Alison Cook and Kimberly Miller describe their unique five-step process for bringing peace to overwhelming emotions and harmony to your inner world. Do you ever struggle to calm your competing internal "enemies"? Boundaries for Your Soul provides a Spirit-based plan for creating remarkable serenity within by helping you recognize that these often-overwhelming emotions are not your enemies; rather, they are helpers who have gone well beyond their roles, robbing you of deep-down joy and genuine connection with others. By compassionately guiding them to their proper functions, however, you can make them your greatest encouragers and allies. In Boundaries for Your Soul: How to Turn Your Overwhelming Thoughts and Feelings into Your Greatest Allies, Cook and Miller guide you through a five-step process for doing so, showing you how to introduce the Holy Spirit to your wayward emotions and transform your weaknesses into powerful strengths. Filled with anecdotes and wisdom from the authors' combined 25 years of study and clinical practice, Boundaries for the Soul leads listeners on a journey of personal discovery grounded in the Christian tradition. Additional helps include exercises and opportunities for personal reflection. Buy Boundaries for Your Soul: How to Turn Your Overwhelming Thoughts and Feelings into Your Greatest Allies now. What keeps us from flourishing in life is a neglect of the inner life of the soul. It’s the engine where everything starts…and stops. And more and more today, this neglect is driven by our ambition to accomplish something big outside ourselves. We live in a society that pressures us to achieve professionally, socially, and through the constant acquisition of things, status, and titles. The trouble is that this rat-race to achieve is a never-ending ride. You can’t get off this train without a major interruption of mindset, shift of priorities, and a willingness to make a choice to change. Today, you’re going to learn how to flourish in this very competitive, demanding culture and even redefine greatness. Buy the Book What keeps us from flourishing in our spiritual lives is a neglect of the inner life of the soul. And more and more today, this neglect is driven by our ambition to accomplish something big outside ourselves. We live in a society that pressures us to achieve professionally, socially, and through the constant acquisition of material possessions. Drawing on a wide range of sources including scripture, church history, psychology, and neuroscience, as well as a rich variety of stories from his own life, Ken Shigematsu demonstrates how the gospel redeems our desires and reorders our lives. He offers fresh perspective on how certain spiritual practices help orient our lives so that our souls can flourish in the midst of a demanding, competitive society. And he concludes with a liberating and counter-cultural definition of true greatness. Survival Guide for the Soul: How to Flourish Spiritually in a World that Pressures Us to Achieve will appeal to anyone who longs to experience a deeper relationship with Christ in the midst of the daily pressures to succeed, as well as to those on the borderlands of faith seeking to transcend the human tendency to define ourselves by our production and success. You and I have one life to live. But few of us step into manifesting the full expression of who we were designed to be. Why? Because of the fear that being seen and heard for who we really are will result in rejection; rejection not because of what we have or haven't done, but rejection of our very personhood. You see, it's one thing to feel as though you've not done enough. But it's a greater tragedy to feel as though you aren’t enough. Allow me to paint a picture in this week's bonus episode.

Level-up with me. How many of you feel as if you take one step forward in life only to fall back two—or ten—steps? You struggle and push through one obstacle and then discover an even larger one looming right ahead of you. It’s intimidating, isn’t it? I’ve been there. We’ve talked about my journey a lot here on the show. But what if our strategy to deal with the storms of life was off, not because we’re doing anything wrong tactically, but because we’re looking in the wrong direction. I know that probably confused you. But stay with me. What I’m getting at is that our perspective in trouble often dictates how we navigate through the trouble. So today, we’re going to tackle that very subject with Samuel Rodriguez. He’s a respected communicator around the world, but most notably, is a senior advisor to the President of the United States. He’s walked through storms to say the least. And today, he’s going to show all of us how to do it better! Buy the Book Based on the story (see Acts 27-28) of the Apostle Paul's near catastrophic shipwreck, this is a call to individuals to "shake off" problems and disasters in life and move forward to new health and wholeness. To everyone on the ship with the Apostle Paul, it looked like a certain disaster. But as Paul predicted, everyone did survive--even though they made it to safety only by grasping "broken pieces of wood." In his unique way, Rodriguez compellingly explains that "God makes wonderful things in our life come from our broken pieces. Because of Christ in our life, we have the power to shake off fear, rejection, and failure--just like Paul later shook off the viper that should have killed him." Buy Shake Free: How to Deal with the Storms, Shipwrecks, and Snakes in Your Life now. Rodriguez has been among many lists of influencers in America, which have recognized his impact across the religious and Latino communities, including: “40 People Who Radically Changed The World” – Charisma Magazine 2015 “101 Most Influential Leaders” – Latino Leaders Magazine 2015 and 2016 “Top 100 Christian Leaders in America” – Newsmax 2018 “2013 TIME nomination as 100 most influential people in the world – TIME 2013 “10 White & Brown MLKs of Our Time” – Black Christian News 2013 No. 1 bestselling author of “Be Light” – L.A. What if today, you realized that a misconception about yourself has been driving your day-to-day existence? And as a result, you’ve not been seeing yourself and the world around you as it really is. Would you be frustrated? Quickly motivated to discover the issue and re-direct the course of your life? I really believe a misconception is one of the most dangerous threats in life. And the biggest misconception a lot of people live with is about who they really are, their identity outside of their performance, and the role and identity of Who God is in their lives. Perhaps what you’ve really been searching for through hard work, performance, and just flat-out striving is much simpler than you think. And what if that one misconception about your life could change the trajectory of your life forever? Joining me today is Chad Norris. He’s the lead pastor of Bridgeway Church in Greenville, South Carolina, and author of two books, including Mama Jane's Secret: Walking In Deep Friendship with God. Buy Chad's Books Mama Jane was a hero! A rock of faith and tenacity, of hope and love, and Chad Norris’ paternal grandmother. She spent her life modeling Christ, loving God and others and four generations of her family have been eternally impacted because of it. It’s here that we uncover a great secret - that Jesus came to reconnect us to Father, to restore relationship with his children. Building deep friendship with God starts with shifting our perceptions of who God says He is and who He says we are - the journey of sonship. For too long those of us who call ourselves Christians have grown numb to the truth that we are heirs to an eternal Kingdom. It is time to awaken and build a friendship with the one who has loved us since before we were ever born. It is time to truly know our Father, the King. He’s awakening His children to something extraordinary, something that’s been there waiting for us all along. He’s ready for us to accept our inheritance, to choose love over fear, to live without offense or excuses, to walk in the identity of son and daughter. He is ready to unleash all the blessings of Heaven in our lives. But, He is waiting on us. Buy Mama Jane's Secret: Walking In Deep Friendship with God now. Demonstrating humor, candor, and personal vulnerability, this Southern Baptist preacher offers an entertaining, non-religious look at the Holy Spirit. He shares transparently, recounting his own history of depression and panic attacks until Jesus rescued him and showed him how to do the works of the Father. As Norris explains, “I had no paradigm for that.” Then he challenges readers to engage with the supernatural. Even though Jesus said we will do even greater things than he did, we don't.
